How scalp micropigmentation works
SMP — widely known as a hair tattoo — is a cosmetic procedure, not a medical one. A fine needle deposits medical-grade pigment into the upper dermis of your scalp in individual points. Each deposit is sized, angled and shaded to imitate a hair follicle emerging from the skin. Sit close enough and you can see the dots; at conversational distance they resolve into the appearance of a close buzz cut.
Nothing is implanted and nothing grows. What changes is contrast. A bare scalp reflects light evenly and the eye reads it as empty; once it carries follicle-depth pigment, the same scalp reads as hair. That is why SMP works equally well on a fully bald head and on a thinning crown where it simply darkens the ground beneath existing hair.
The work is built over roughly three sessions spaced two weeks apart. The first lays a light foundation, the second adds depth and fills gaps, the third refines the hairline and balances density. Building it gradually is deliberate — it lets pigment settle and lets us correct tone before it is permanent.

What a session actually involves
Sessions run two to four hours depending on the area being covered. There is no anaesthetic required for most people — the sensation sits somewhere between a scratch and a mild sunburn, and it is meaningfully lighter than a conventional tattoo because the needle does not go as deep. You can drive yourself home afterwards and return to work the next day.
For four days after each session, no sweating, no swimming, no direct sun and no washing the treated area. From day five you can shower and shave normally. Between sessions the pigment lightens by roughly a fifth as it settles — this is expected, and it is why the second and third passes exist.
Long term, pigment softens over several years rather than disappearing. Sun exposure is the biggest variable. A single short touch-up session restores the depth, and most clients come back for one every few years.

It is long-lasting rather than truly permanent. Pigment is placed shallower than a traditional tattoo, so it softens gradually over several years instead of staying fixed. Most clients schedule a touch-up every three to five years.
That happens when traditional tattoo ink is used instead of pigment formulated for scalp work. We use carbon-based SMP pigment diluted to match your natural follicle colour, which fades lighter in the same tone rather than shifting colour.
Yes, and most clients do. Shave, clipper or razor — the pigment sits below the surface and is unaffected. Keeping the surrounding hair short is what keeps the illusion consistent.
