What SMP actually is

A shaved head that looks like a choice, not a diagnosis

Scalp micropigmentation — the treatment most people first find by searching for a “hair tattoo” — is non-surgical and purely cosmetic. Using a fine needle, medical grade pigment is deposited into the upper layer of the scalp in thousands of tiny points, each one sized and shaded to pass for a real hair follicle. Nothing is implanted, nothing grows, and there is no downtime beyond a few days of avoiding sweat and sun.

The effect depends entirely on contrast. A bald scalp reflects light and reads as empty; once it carries follicle-depth pigment, the eye stops seeing scalp and starts seeing hair cut short. The same principle fills a receding hairline, darkens the ground under thinning hair, and breaks up the smooth white line of a transplant scar.

What we do

Treatments built around your pattern of loss

Hair loss does not arrive the same way twice. These are the treatments we offer, and the consultation decides which combination fits you.

Women's SMP

Density work built for wider parts, diffuse thinning and traction loss along the hairline.

Hair Additions

Non-surgical hair systems, toppers and additions for length and volume SMP alone cannot give.

Watch a treatment come together

Every dot is placed by hand, matched to your natural follicle colour and layered over multiple sessions. Here is what that actually looks like.

The process

Four steps from first call to finished result

SMP is built in layers on purpose. Rushing it is how you end up with a result that looks flat, too dark, or too sharply drawn.

Free consultation

In studio or over the phone. We look at your pattern of loss, your skin tone and what you want the end result to do, then tell you honestly whether SMP is the right call.

Hairline mapping

Your hairline is drawn on and adjusted with you in the mirror before a single needle touches skin. Age-appropriate, symmetrical, and shaped to your face.

Layered sessions

Most people need three sessions spaced roughly two weeks apart. Each pass adds depth and density so the result builds gradually instead of arriving all at once.

Aftercare and touch-ups

Written aftercare, a follow-up check, and touch-ups down the line to keep the pigment reading true as it settles.

Results

Drag the line. That is the whole argument.

We can bring the studio to you

Hair loss is a private thing, and not everyone wants to sit in a chair where they might be seen. If you would rather have the work done at home, we travel anywhere inside our 50-mile radius — the full setup, the same sterile single-use equipment, the same session structure.

It is also the practical option if you work long shifts, have small children at home, or are recovering from a transplant and would rather not be out in the sun and wind straight after a session.

  • Anywhere within 50 miles of Fredericksburg
  • Single-use needles and sealed pigment, every visit
  • Early starts — we open at 7:00am on weekdays

Common questions

The things everyone asks first

Most clients put it somewhere between a light scratch and a mild sunburn — noticeably easier than a conventional tattoo, because the pigment sits shallower in the skin. Sessions run two to four hours and most people find them very manageable.

Expect several years from a full treatment before the pigment starts to soften. Sun exposure, skin type and how your body processes pigment all affect the timeline. A short touch-up session brings the depth straight back.

No. The whole technique is pointillism — thousands of separate deposits placed at varying depths, sizes and shades so the eye reads texture rather than a flat patch. Done properly, it looks like closely shaved hair.

Yes. Pigment is mixed and diluted per client, and we test on a small area first. Matching is based on your natural follicle colour, not a fixed shade chart.

Yes — hair tattoo is the everyday name for scalp micropigmentation. The technique differs from body tattooing in the pigment used, the needle, and the shallower depth, which is why SMP fades softer and never shifts blue or green the way old tattoo ink can.
